Summer Tube Olympics 2024.

Post by tangy »

Hello from the TOSA (Tube Olympics Supreme Administrator). I am here today to formally open proceedings for the 2024 summer Tube Olympics.

We are back following an enforced cancellation of the 2020 games. This year we are hosting our events before the Paris Olympics so as to avoid the main holiday season in August plus our closing ceremony will "hand the baton" over to Paris on their first full day of competition.

However, we are not crossing the Channel for our Tube Olympics as we have all the relevant infrastructure already in place right here in London. London here we come...

There are six events in which you can compete in (pick as many as you wish), though the more you enter the more chance you have of gaining a medal. The dates for each event are as follows:

Event 1: Tuesday 9th July 2024- All Lines Challenge EVENING EVENT
Event 2: Friday 12th July 2024- Bottle Challenge EVENING EVENT
Event 3: Wednesday 17th July 2024- Zone 1 Challenge EVENING EVENT
Event 4: Tuesday 23rd July 2024- DLR Challenge EVENING EVENT
Event 5: Friday 26th July 2024- Full Network Challenge FULL DAY EVENT
Event 6: Saturday 27th July 2024- Random 15 Challenge (followed by closing ceremony) DAYTIME/EVENING EVENT **Also doubles up as round 6 of the current Random 15 Championship**

This is just a summary post to ensure all challengers have notice of when each event will be held, so as to book transport/accommodation/days leave. Full details of each event will be posted individually nearer the time, all evening events will commence no earlier than 18:00 UK local time.

Tube Olympics is open to all, whether you are a seasoned challenger or a young upstart. Comments/discussion welcome below.

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

Actually, given the close geographical proximity of the Paris games, it could have been quite good fun to have held TO on the Paris Metro this year! ;-)

On holiday 9th and 12th July
Full network won't be possible as torn hamstring never healed correctly from double tear 18 months ago
May turn up and limp around Z1 and DLR on 17th / 23rd July
Should be OK for R15 27th July

Appreciate the early dates on these :)

I've been thinking I should really do a FNC again soon as it's been over a year since I did it so I may take part on July 26th

Could I suggest that for the Z1 challenge, the window opens at 18:00?

Some of the slower times for this challenge are nudging 4 hours, and the last fast train out of Paddington is just after 22:00.

Looking back at the 2016 games, the following times applied for the evening events:

All lines: 18:00- 20:30, no fixed start. As many attempts as you like within window.
Bottle: 19:00, fixed start for all challengers from nominated station.
Zone 1: 18:30, fixed start for all challengers from nominated station.
DLR: 18:30- 19:00 window. No fixed start.

To keep consistency, I will most likely adopt these times for the 2024 events.

I would be happy for Z1 to move forward 30 mins as Rich suggested although I suspect the network will be incredibly busy at that tine

I was thinking the Z1 would have a floating start so was suggesting opening the window at 6pm, but if it is a fixed start time and location 6:30 is probably better.

Z1 has to be fixed as is a nominated starting station so had to be a level playing field

As it's 8 years since the last Summer TO, I'd forgotten what the rules are!

I'll have to see what will be possible with work. I'd like to attend as many as I can- but my shifts can finish anywhere between 16:30 and 18:15. I'll see if I can request the earlier shifts on these days.
