Sachef’s Alternative Challenges
Hi all,
I am a new tube challenger and have been doing tube challenges for about half a year. In this topic I will describe various attempts at alternative challenges. I’ve done several challenges in the past with various people, including the DLR, All Lines and Circle Line bottle.
Originally our plan for today was to do the south London challenge, and we were going well despite a missed connection at East Putney with 25 and 29 second connections at Stockwell and Brixton respectively. However, we then ran into an 18 minute wait arriving at Battersea Power Station on the bus and decided to abort the challenge.
After lunch, we decided to do the DLR challenge, however shortly after the start we were met with a 6 minute wait at Tower Gateway in addition to a previous 3 minute wait at Shadwell and so again decided to abort.
This gave us time to go for the all lines challenge and this went better than the rest with a “golden triple” arriving almost immediately at Farringdon (despite severe delays on the Hammersmith & City Line) and great connections everywhere up until we just missed a Waterloo and city line train at Bank. As we’d only just made our Central line train we hadn’t had time to go to the correct door position and so a 4 minute wait ensued. What could have been! Two more excellent connections followed before another unfortunate narrowly missed train at Westminster but the finish was perfect with every train arriving just as we got there and we managed to finish at Leicester Square in 40:45, putting us in 9th place on the leaderboard.
Full details of the challenge including the precise route taken, journey log and photos will be sent to Tangy.
Looking forward to doing more challenges!

Sachef
Welcome to the Tube Challenge community, and well done on your efforts - especially on getting 9th place on the All Lines!
Incidentally, you might as well have continued with the South of the River Challenge as (AFAIK) no time has been set since Battersea opened so you would have been de facto fastest!
Several of the other Challenges are also currently unclaimed owing to the NLE, Elizabeth Line and Barking Riverside.

Iain,
Yes there were 3 of us attempting the challenge together. I think it’s more fun challenging together!

It's even more fun Challenging in competition with each other (unless of course you do what I usually do and make a colossal blunder at the start and not see anyone else for the rest of the Challenge!).
Trying to get one over on another Challenger who's on the same train as you is all part of the fun!

Re: Sachef’s Alternative Challenges
There have been four (recorded) attempts at South of the River since the NLE opened, but none since the Elizabeth Line. ...having said that, is the Elizabeth Line a tube line for the purposes of this record? It has five stations south of the river, but at the extremities of the line, so it is adding a lot of time.RJSRdg wrote: ↑25 Jul 2022, 22:33 Sachef

SLAM hasn't been attempted since either NLE or Liz opened, nor has Z1+2.

Re: Sachef’s Alternative Challenges
South of the Thames challenge is London Underground stations only so whilst the record has been reset for Battersea extension it does not require a further reset to include the Elizabeth Line as Crossrail is effectively part of National Rail (like London Overground).

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

But SLAM would now require visits to Abbey Wood, Woolwich, Maidenhead, Twyford and Reading?tangy wrote: ↑07 Aug 2022, 11:43 South of the Thames challenge is London Underground stations only so whilst the record has been reset for Battersea extension it does not require a further reset to include the Elizabeth Line as Crossrail is effectively part of National Rail (like London Overground).

Re: Sachef’s Alternative Challenges
SLAM stands for "South London All Modes", so while you would need to visit Abbey Wood and Woolwich, I don't think you need to go out to Reading as those stations are not in London.tintin wrote: ↑07 Aug 2022, 21:50But SLAM would now require visits to Abbey Wood, Woolwich, Maidenhead, Twyford and Reading?tangy wrote: ↑07 Aug 2022, 11:43 South of the Thames challenge is London Underground stations only so whilst the record has been reset for Battersea extension it does not require a further reset to include the Elizabeth Line as Crossrail is effectively part of National Rail (like London Overground).

Re: Sachef’s Alternative Challenges
You could also claim that the official (though geographically inaccurate) London Underground map has Maidenhead, Twyford and Reading north of the Thames.
